This Bulrush is endemic in the moderate clime-zones of the northern hemisphere and emigrated into Australia and South-Africa. This shore- and marsh-plant grows with creeping, sharp pointed root-stocks and can build complete patches, is very important for the making of open shallow waters into land, it produces broad, grey-green to bluish green leaves and on the flower-stems between the leaves it forms rather short, thick, cigar-like, deep brown female flower-spikes with male, bright yellow male flowers on top. For a spot in sun to light shade in shallow water and nutritious soil. Close-in the roots properly to avoid it growing rampant. Perfectly winter-hardy.
