Simply lay floating plants on top of the water. They form roots to extract nutrients from the water and extract the CO2 they need directly from the air. Floating plants play an important role in the pond. They create shade, preventing the formation of algae. Fish like to shelter under their leaves and they are also an excellent spot for other pond animals, such as salamanders to lay their eggs. Floating plants can multiply quickly and can even overrun the entire pond. So, be sure to remove some of them from the pond occasionally to keep two-thirds of the water’s surface free of plants. Throw the surplus floating plants in the bin and not into a local ditch.
