A natural pond is ideal for nature lovers. It is a safe place for endangered native plants and animals. Building one of these ponds is similar to building an ornamental pond, except that it is exclusively home to native plants and animals. That is why some owners of natural ponds simply wait for a while after building to see what develops naturally in the pond.
Are you less patient? Look in your pond speciality store or garden centre for genuine native aquatic plants. They attract such rich, varied wildlife that there is always plenty to experience in and around a natural pond. What’s more, this sort of pond needs very little technical equipment. With sloping banks, you can create a fantastic environment and plenty of shelter for plants and animals. Create a quiet seating area for yourself a few metres away from the pond and sit back and watch the activity. Maintenance is limited to thinning excess plants and some tidying up in the spring or autumn. Otherwise, you can just let nature take its course. After all, it is a natural pond.
