Water lilies take root in zone 4 of the pond and they prefer calm, still water. Their leaves provide shady areas, countering algal growth and forming a shelter for fish. During the day, the water lily is a joy to behold but the flowers close up in gloomy weather and at night. The instructions on the label will tell you the right depth for planting the different varieties. This can vary between 40 cm and 120 cm below the water’s surface. There is, therefore, a suitable variety of water lily for every type of pond. Water lilies are usually planted in pond baskets and placed on the bottom of the pond, tub, trough or container.
